Description

This barn owl poster shows Britain’s best known owl. One that is found everywhere except in the Scottish Highlands. Yet there are probably fewer than five thousand breeding pairs in the UK. That said, they are not on the vulnerable list.

The owl’s heart shaped face and dish-shaped facial disc funnels sound to the owl’s ears. Those ears are hidden in the feathers. Blow softly on the feathers, and one can see the small ear holes without lobes.

Barn owls hunt during the day and night. At dawn and dusk they quarter the ground methodically, flying low over fields and hedgerows, hunting for mice, voles, shrews, and small birds.

Barn Owl, The Night Hunter

And at night their acute hearing makes them formidable hunters. Because their wings are large and broad in proportion to their bodies, they can glide soundlessly to their quarry. And their hearing helps them pick out the sounds of small mammals moving in the grass. Once over their prey, their long legs enable them to hover and then drop down into long grass and pick up their prey in their talons. And there’s one other feature of their anatomy helps Barn owls find their prey. Barn owls have flexible necks that allows the bird to turn its head more than one hundred and eighty degrees in either direction. That’s how you are likely to see them, sitting on a convenient branch and scanning the ground below without shifting position.
