Bluebird

Bluebird is a birthday card featuring a small blue bird (a bluebird) standing on a fence with its wing formed from the text ‘Happy Birthday’

Ah, the little bird speaks to all of us. We melt at the sight of small and appealing creatures that seem so full of the power of their powerlessness.

Perhaps that was why Donald Campbell named his racing car Bluebird or that Vera Lynn sang about them:

There’ll be bluebirds over
The white cliffs of Dover,
Tomorrow, just you wait and see.

I think of these birds as a kind of generic idea of a bird, rather than a real species. And coming from the UK, I am not familiar with birds in the New World. But after reading about them, I now know that there really are bluebirds. They are a group of birds in the thrush family. They have blue, or blue and rose beige, plumage. And although the colour patterns of both male and female bluebirds are similar, females are less brightly coloured than the males.

Donald Campbell

The other association with bluebird is Donald Campbell and his attempt at the world’s water speed record. Campbell began his speed record attempts in the summer of 1949 using his father’s powerboats. The crafts that his father, Malcolm Campbell, raced were named Blue Bird. There was a Blue Bird 3 and a Blue Bird 4 that his son Donald took over. When he began racing he renamed the boats Bluebird.
