A Mother’s Day card featuring pink tulips and text ‘Happy Mother’s Day’
The world loves bunches of flowers for Mother’s Day and here we see a closeup of two beautiful pale pink tulips. A bunch of flowers would be the perfect gift to complement and complete the day for a lucky mother.
Where Tulips Come From
Tulips are native to Central Asia, specifically the region now known as Kazakhstan. Ottoman traders them introduced to Europe in the 16th century. They became very popular, particularly in the Netherlands. People went wild for them and for certain colours. Prices rose and then collapsed, and so many people had money in the ‘bubble’ that it threatened the stability and economics of the country.
Still today the Netherlands are the biggest producers of tulips. Their rich, flat polder land is suited not only to growing but to managing the vast numbers grown for flowers and bulbs.
The tulip has journeyed from a wildflower in Central Asia to a global horticultural icon. That is a testament to its appeal for its very simplicity. It does not cry out that it is a wealthy person’s flower. Anyone, almost, can afford a tulip. Yet its beauty is recognised instantly and everywhere by everyone.
