By Jove

By Jove is a congratulations card featuring a rhea and text ‘By Jove, Congratulations’. This particular rhea is from an upper class family. He was raised on a country estate doted over by loving parents. Unfortunately, his cocooned life was brought to an abrupt end when he was packed off to boarding school. Still, he triumphed in adversity and was soon doffing his cap to his peers with aplomb. Moreover, he retained his sense of fairness and never scorned those lower down the social ranks. To that end he could be seen engaging in animated conversations with porters and footmen.

Of course rheas are large, flightless birds with grey-brown plumage, long legs and long necks, similar to an ostrich but a bit smaller and more delicate in appearance. Therefore it came as quite a shock to the rhea to find himself out in the world after four years cloistered in college. Much as he wanted to fly away and hide, he could not. But being as resourceful as he was intelligent, he persevered. Once more, he rose to the occasion. Soon he could be seen swanning about town dropping the phrase By Jove with the best of them. But still he did not forget those who had befriended him in college. Even when he became chairman of the board of  the foremost South American airline he still send money to the staff at the college where his true education had bloomed.

By Jupiter

By Jove is a phrase that means By Jupiter and is of course and exclamation of surprise. It is used either by upper-middle class people or by anyone with a sense of humour regarding the English social classes.

The word Jove comes from the Latin Iovis, which means to shine. Somewhere along the line the letter I was swapped and became a J and the word became Jupiter, the god of ancient mythology.
