A greeting card for friendship featuring a red, wing-backed chair on a tiled floor and text – a quotation from Henry David Thoreau ‘I had three chairs in my house: One for solitude, two for friendship, three for society.’
In the chapter entitled ‘Visitors’ in his book Walden, Thoreau wrote:
I had three chairs in my house; one for solitude, two for friendship, three for society. When visitors came in larger and unexpected numbers there was but the third chair for them all, but they generally economized the room by standing up.
It is surprising how many great men and women a small house will contain. I have had twenty-five or thirty souls, with their bodies, at once under my roof, and yet we often parted without being aware that we had come very near to one another.
Thoreau tried to do away with everything that was froth or frippery, everything that stood in the way of living a whole life. He went into the backwoods to live as simple and unpretentious a life as he could, and Walden is his record of his attempt.
The variety and story woven into nature infused all his work as a poet and writer, philosopher and environmentalist.
He never forgot he was a person among people, and it is not surprising to learn that he was a leading abolitionist in the anti-slavery movement.
