Clematis

A card for every day featuring a deep pink-coloured clematis.

Everyone knows the clematis, which is not surprising given that there are over 300 species worldwide. What might be surprising is that it is a member of the buttercup family.

The English names for the one species native to Britain are traveller’s joy and old man’s beard because of the profusion of silky hairs on its seed head once it has flowered.

The word clematis itself has a humble origin, derived from the Greek word for twig.
