Constancy
Constancy in a Friendship card with two mannequins holding hands standing or lying side by side. And with them is a quote from Dorothy Parker ‘Constant Use Has Not Worn Ragged The Fabric Of Our Friendship’
So what is that quality that we admire in others and ourselves? What is it about being and continuing to be constant through the trials and tribulations of life? Perhaps it is because there is a limit to how much change we can take and adapt to.
Earthquakes, Floods, Tidal Waves
One’s heart goes out to people who are adversely affected by events that are much bigger than themselves. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, tidal waves, and floods. All of these upset lives. And it is painful to have to regroup and gather in one’s resources when one has lost everything. No house and no belongings, all the dreams and plans swept away.
Civil Strife and Refugees
Or in the case of war and civil strife the threat of death and the uncertainty of being a refugee. In the modern world and what one might call fortress Europe and fortress North America, this things are being brought home to us every day. refugees are hammering at the door to be let in, and we must each achieve out equilibrium in this knowledge.
We are living in mass societies geared to consume and divorced from community. People are living anonymously in urban landscapes. And for the most part they feel they are inconsequential to the way the world moves along.
Of course, there will be some who want to get into the lifeboat and kick others off it. But in the main, people will put up with a lot and withstand a lot of privation if they know that everyone is in the same boat.
But when some are rich beyond the dreams of Croesus and others see them laughing at the value of their very selves, then there is no society. There is just a fractured mass of people crying at the injustice. So when one person shows constancy and fairness they should be valued. They should be valued for their adherence to their behaviour despite all of the trials of life.
