Description

Depot is a greeting card designed like a wartime public information leaflet. It is a leaflet or proclamation about food rationing created as a spoof to support the anti-Brexit movement. Specifically the heading states ‘Brexit Service, European Withdrawal Directive.

The text on the card reads as follows:

BREXIT SERVICE
EUROPEAN UNION WITHDRAWAL DIRECTIVE
NOTICE
YOUR RATION BOOK, INTENDED TO SAFEGUARD FOOD SUPPLIES, WILL BE ISSUED AT YOUR LOCAL BREXIT FOOD OFFICE.
THOSE NOT HOLDING A NATIONAL REGISTRATION NUMBER SHOULD MAKE APPLICATION AT THEIR LOCAL ARMY DEPOT.

It addresses itself to the population at large. And it reiterates that your ration book that is intended to safeguard food supplies. Furthermore that those ration books will be issued at your local Brexit food office. It goes on to state what that those not holding a national registration number should do. And the answer is that they should make application at the local army depot.

The spoof is in the style of the writing and the situation is describes. That is to say, the world that it pictures is a dystopia where food is rationed because it is unavailable. In the United Kingdom we are used to the idea that in times of war supplies routes might be blockaded. But to picture rationing in peace-time we have to imagine that Britain has sunk low. That is that it cannot afford to maintain the supply chain of daily life that we are used to. And all caused by foolishly sinking the very boat upon which we sail.

A Depot

What is a depot? There is for example, a bus depot, which is where the buses drive to be parked overnight. It is also sometimes the place where the lost property office for the buses is located. After all, what is likely to happen if someone leaves something on a bus and the driver finds it? Surely the depot is the most obvious place to store it.

An Ammunition Store

And it is of course also used in a military sense. To be exact it is where stores and munitions are put for distribution to whichever of the branches of the armed forces demands them in times of need.
