Elephant gestate for almost two years, and might give birth to up to twelve young in a lifetime. Elephant babies are called calves, and weigh around 90kg (about 200 lbs) at birth, so ‘babies’ is a relative term. They can get on their feet within hours, and walk around confidently within a day of being born. Still, they don’t have a lot of control over their trunks, which flop around for months until they develop control at about one year old. The calf’s mother, aunts, sisters, and the matriarch are very important, a group within which the calf is protected while it becomes independent. Young elephants take milk from their mothers until they are anywhere from five to ten years of age.
