There is anecdotal evidence from the Hohenwald Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, that two elephants who had met and been together for some months, remembered one another after being separated for more than twenty years.
There are many stories of people who worked with elephants, and then been separated for some years, immediately taking up where they had left off on becoming reacquainted.
And in a study carried out by researchers at the University of Sussex, elephants who recalled a drought period thirty years before were able to retrace their steps in search of water.
As we say, an elephant never forgets.
