Flamingo
A Thank You card featuring a flamingo and text ‘Thank You’
Well would you believe it! The word flamingo comes from the Latin flamma, meaning a flame. So far so good, But then it came into English as the word flamenco. Yes, before it morphed into flamingo sometime in the 16th century it was the very same word we use for the Spanish dance.
In Spanish , the word flameco has three meanings. It means a person who is a native of Flanders as well meaning the Spanish dance and the colourful bird.
How did that happen? There is a suggestion that the dance was named because of the colourful costumes the dancers wore. And the people of Spain (who ruled Flanders in the 16th century) liked to describe things by their opposites. So they named the Gypsy dance and the bird after the Flemish people who were not at all colourful.
