Float

Float is an inspirational card featuring a seated buddha floating in the air and text, ‘Just Float, Baby’

The card uses a combination of ancient wisdom and modern English usage to make its point that the important thing is to go with the flow. The idea of going with the flow dates back to Chinese philosophy.

Dao or Tao is a concept in Chinese philosophy that means the natural order of the universe. It is the task of the individual to discern the order and thereby realise his or her potential. The concept is also found in classical stoicism and in existentialism. The character of that way or flow is difficult to describe. That is precisely because one has to be attuned to it.

The Outsider

In Albert Camus’ novel ‘The Outsider’, the principal character feels like a drifting outsider. Through an odd set of circumstances he agrees to protect a friend. In the ensuing scenes he shoots and kills a man on the beach. In the moment of doing that he says of himself: ’I knew in that moment that I had broken the balance of the day.’ The idea that there is a balance to the day is in itself a philosophical concept, of course.

The modern use of the concept is of being able to float. That is that one rises above the insignificance of human obstructions, of people who try to pull one off one’s cloud.

Being In The Community Of Man

The ascetic, the man or woman who wanders away from the community, these are outsiders. The trick of being in touch with the balance of the universe is to be able to live in the community. It means to live an ordinary life in an extraordinary way.
