Hardship

Father’s Day card featuring a sheep in a walled field and a speech bubble with the sheep saying ‘Hardship? You don’t know what hardship is, my lad. In my day we slept on the moors.’

This is, of course, a play on the famous Monty Python skit about the privileges enjoyed by modern youth. The skit ran along the lines of one of the old fogies saying ‘In our day we slept on bare boards.’

And the retort from one of the other old fogies who constantly finds fault with everything and reminisces about the old days would be something along the lines of ‘Bare boards! Pure paradise – we had nothing but rusty tin cans and a sheet of paper…’

And so it went on with each one seeking to outdo the other for the dreadfulness of their lives in the olden days.

Of course, when we read this in the context of this card we see the love and respect that shines through the gentle fun poked at the old sheep.
