Description

Hyphen

A card for everyday featuring a hyphen and an explanation of its origin together with examples of its use.

The explanation runs as follows:

The word ‘hyphen’ comes from the Latin hyphen (yes, it’s the same word) and it means ‘together under one’.

The ‘under one’ comes from the fact that originally in Latin, sentences were written without any spaces between the words.

Therefore, the hyphen had to be written below the words.

In about 600 CE writers started to put spaces between words and moved the hyphen between two words to indicate they should be read as one.
