Ink Pen

A Birthday Card featuring the nib of an ink pen with text ‘Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns’, except the the last word is not yet fully written.

They say there is a renaissance in the use of ink pens fostered by a desire to re-use the hand muscles that have become used only to tapping on a keyboard.

The metal nib dip pen has a rich and fascinating history.

The use of metal nibs in dip pens began to emerge in the Middle Ages. In Europe, scribes started using quill pens, which were made from bird feathers, and these pens were eventually modified to have metal nibs. The nibs were usually made of silver, brass, or steel, and they featured a slit that allowed ink to flow onto the paper.

The first significant development in the evolution of the metal nib dip pen came in the early 19th century with the invention of the steel pen in Birmingham, England. Joseph Bramah patented a new design for a metal nib pen that was more durable and flexible than previous versions. A manufacturer in Birmingham, John Mitchell, pioneered the mass production of steel pens.

These innovations laid the foundation for its widespread use.

The metal nib dip pen’s dominance started to decline in the late 19th century with the introduction of the fountain pen, which had an internal ink reservoir. Fountain pens eliminated the need to constantly dip the pen into an inkwell, providing a more convenient writing experience.

Despite the emergence of newer writing instruments, the metal nib dip pen continued to be used by artists, calligraphers, and enthusiasts who appreciated the control and versatility it offered. Today, metal nib dip pens are still valued for their ability to create intricate and expressive lines, and they are often used in artistic and creative endeavours.
