Lunch

Lunch is a greeting card for friendship featuring cutlery in a can on a wooden table with text ‘Let’s Get Together’

The invitation to lunch or a bite to eat is just the kind of easy invitation that friends like. Nothing too fancy – just a get together and a natter over lunch in a simple, no-frills cafe. One could say that the fancier the establishment the less likely the pair are to settle in and get to the heart of matters. That is, it is not hard to see that people can be hoist on their own petard if they strive for appearances by heading for a grand restaurant rather than a down-home cafe.

The Origin Of The Word Lunch

The origin of the word lunch is interesting in that is is connected to the word meaning a thick piece or hunk of something. That might be a piece of bread or a hunk of cheese. Add an onion and we have a traditional ploughman’s lunch. There is the carbohydrate, the fat and the vegetable. Recent studies suggest that the acids in onion cut the fat and reduce the risk of plaque formation. Well, there is every reason to think that people in earlier times were imbued with folk wisdom built up over centuries. It is in the modern times of constant change and breaking free from tradition that such wisdom is lost.

The Origin Of The Word Natter

The word natter is interesting in itself. Nowadays we think of it as just chatting intimately. At one time it meant to chatter away aimlessly or to nag or grumble. So there was a negative connotation. But not today when we can talk about having a good old natter. Well, perhaps there is an element of complaining about the wrongs and ills of the world, but not such as to bring one down. The value of humour as a release valve when complaining cannot be overestimated.
