Panda

A romantic greeting card featuring a cute giant panda sitting among delicious bamboo leaves and thinking its wonderful romantic thoughts.

We photographed this giant panda at the Edinburgh Zoo, If my memory serves me correctly, this is the male of the pair. His name is Yang Guang, which means sunshine in English. The female is named ‘Tian Tian’ in Chinese, which means ‘Sweetie’ in English.

They eat bamboo, as everyone knows. And they spend most of their day eating and getting through approximately 17kg of bamboo stems a day, Bamboo is about 50% water content, so pandas don’t need to drink water. And although there is not much nutritional value in bamboo, it grows all year around. Therefore it is always available where they live, at an altitude of 1,500 to 3,000 metres. Pandas once roamed over a wide area of Asia. Now they are only in southwestern China in the mountain forests provinces of Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu.

Pandas live alone, and the only time they come together is during breeding. That happens only once a year, and during the short period when the female is in oestrus. A female comes into maturity at about six or seven years old and goes into oestrus around springtime. However, a panda’s estrus is also affected by the latitude and altitude, so it is a tricky business getting two animals in a cooperative state. And this explains why there are only about 1,800 giant pandas in the world.
