Pencil Dreams
Pencil Dreams is an Inspirational greeting card featuring a pencil and shavings. The shavings seem to be flying away and the text reads ‘A pencil and a dream can take you anywhere’. That’s what pencil dreams are made of.
A more detailed look at this particular pencil will reveal it is American. That is it was marketed in the USA. And it is a No. 2 Pencil. In fact the original quotation for this particular card is by Joyce Meyer who said that a #2 pencil and a dream will get you anywhere.
We adopted the quote because our biggest market is in the UK. But we kept the American pencil because we had it. And the reason we had it is that one of the partnership that makes up Flying Twigs is American.
A No.2 Pencil And An HB Pencil
The number on an American pencil is the equivalent of the B, HB, etc on pencils in the UK and continental Europe. No. 2 is the equivalent of an HB. And an HB is of course mid-way between the hardest of pencil leads and the softest. For example, in my pencil case I have an 8B pencil, which is so soft that it is impossible to make a thin solid line. But it is perfect for spreading its dense blackness onto the paper.
At one time, pencil manufacturers in the UK and continental Europe used only letters. Thus, a 2B pencil was a BB.
If #2 is mid-way in the American pencil nomenclature, what about the other numbers. Well, the higher the number the harder the pencil. And to accommodate the range of hardness and softness, half numbers are used. That’s why you will see “2” “2-1/2” or “3”
