Permission

Permission is an inspirational greeting card featuring a mannequin or stylised young woman with text ‘Give Yourself Permission To Feel’. This is a card that one could give to a friend who feels oppressed.

Whether it is siblings, partners, parents, or by imagined demands of society, the message is to break loose and walk free.

Since when did anyone need to ask for permission to feel? Well, people do. Children grow up in the atmosphere set by their parents or guardians. Then it is only natural that they tend to adopt their parents’ degree of emotional expression.

Some parents are masters and mistresses of expressing cruelty to their children. They dampen their children’s dreams with a carefully crafted word or a look. Other parents are loving but lack their own ability to express their feelings.

A Tiny Childhood Incident

Sometimes the cause of repression cannot be put down to parent child relationships. It seems to simply be a child that is closed in and unable to express with any immediacy. Perhaps the reason could be traced to some seemingly tiny incident if only one knew where to look.

A Genetic Component

Or perhaps there is a genetic component. Epigenetic studies show that there can be changes in childhood development caused by a modification of a gene expression. There isn’t any alteration of the genetic code itself. Rather, some of the links in the genetic code can be opened or closed in infancy. It can be linked to whether a mother breast feeds or is physically close to the baby. Or it can be caused by poor nutrition. And perhaps it can be caused by a strain in the bonding between child and parent.

As we are very aware, in some cultures, feelings are expressed freely. In others, you can cut the atmosphere with a knife. Nothing is said and everything is said. Some of our most famous playwrights and would be out of a job if there were no repressed individuals about whom they could write. Similarly with psychologists.

Feelings exist without asking for approval. They are part of what makes us human. At the same time they are what makes us vulnerable. And learning to live with and even enjoy that vulnerability is sometimes a lifetime’s work. While we are coming to grips with that we force our feelings down until we are strangers to them. But they have their own energy and they will rarely stay in place for a lifetime.

Permission To Feel

So what is the answer? Some will tell us that the answer is to master our own desires, our addictions. Do that and we create the world where we can express ourselves in a positive way. As Caesar says in Shakespeare’s The Tragedy Of Julius Caesar “Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of death but once.”
