The Wall

An inspirational card with a religious flavour featuring a man wearing a fur hat or shtreimel praying at the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem.

The Western Wall is a retaining wall for the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

The Temple Mount is the site of the First Temple, built by Solomon.

The Babylonians destroyed First Temple and exiled the Jewish population to Babylon. Seventy years later the Persians conquered the Babylonians and allowed the Jews to return home.

Under the reign of Herod, the Jews built the Second Temple, which the Romans destroyed in 70 C.E.

The Romans built a church on the site. When Islam became the dominant religion, the Moslems built the Dome of the Rock.

When Israel regained the Old City in 1967, the Temple Mount itself was left in charge of the Moslem Waqf. Accordingly, Jews pray at the foot of the Wall.

So much history in one spot.
