Description

Trunk Valentine’s Day Card with grey elephant holding a heart-shaped balloon by a string. The text reads ‘Happy Valentine’s Day, Lets go on a love safari.’

Will the balloon slip from the elephant’s trunk? How long can it hold it before it has to relinquish its grip in order to eat or drink? These are unanswered questions, but on mantelpieces and table tops far and wide – wherever the card may reside – the elephant is hanging on.

The use of the word trunk dates from the 1500s. The word is thought to come from trump – which is or was short for trumpet.

The word trumpet itself, as a musical instrument with a long folded tube that is blown into, comes from the 1300s, from the old French word trompe. And that is how words change over the centuries and become mixed up with other words – such as the trunk of a tree or a cabin trunk. Does anyone use cabin trunks any more in this pared down, stripped down world? Now there’s a question.
