Type is a Thank You card featuring a vintage typewriter and typed text on a piece of paper in the typewriter that reads ‘I just had to write to thank you very much for the…’ The text is unfinished to imply that the person sending the card is there and present, bound up in the act of saying thank you.
It is funny to think that until recently, secretaries or ‘typewriters’ did the typing. The boss would not do such mechanical work. The secretary typed and the boss dictated. Nowadays we all type. The internet and computers have been a great leveller for us scriveners.
Of course, before computers there were mechanical typewriters. The typewriter was invented around 1830 and the machine in this card dates from the late 19th century. I had a typewriter at one time – an Olivetti Lettera 22. It was a portable typewriter that came with its own soft carry case.
The Origin Of The Word Typewriter
The word typewriter obviously derives from the word type. And that came into English in the late 15th century after the invention of the printing press. Gutenberg’s printing press revolutionised book and pamphlet publishing because it used individual letters made of metal. That meant that the type could be arranged in multiple ways. Previously, a whole page was designed and cut out to form one large image.
So then type meant the whole printing blocks of metal or wood with letters or characters carved on their faces. They were usually carved in relief, and the paper would be pressed into the depressions. That explains the origin of the word that comes from the Latin word typus which means a figure, a form of some kind. And before that from the word typos, which means to make a dent, an impression, a mark, with a blow.
