A Father’s Day card featuring an unvarnished violin body with an overlaid varnished area and text ‘Dear Dad – Happy Father’s Day’
The wood of the violin shows the grain and the decorative inlaid set of three narrow wooden strips, a light-colored one surrounded by two dark strips. This technique is common to violin creation and is called purfling.
The reason for the contrasting colours is decorative. The principle of adding strips of wood around the edge of the instrument, however, is to make it more resistant to cracks that might start from the edge of the instrument.
