White dog with brown and black patches standing alert three quarters to the viewer on a rough track with a backdrop of hills and trees. Its right front paw is raised a little off the ground. And its head it turned as though to look behind it.
What kind of dog is it. We see what it is doing, but why is it doing it? Can we guess that it is a hunting dog? Is the raised front paw a sign that it needs some validation before going on? And is the turn of the dog’s head an indicator that it is looking back to its master, asking for permission to go on. We read all this from a few clues. For people who have a long familiarity with dogs and their ways, that is probably all they need for them to know what is going on in the painting.
