Beach

An Anniversary card featuring an oystercatcher walking on the shore with text ‘Happy Anniversary, Darling – Fancy A Walk Along The Beach?’

Who could resist such a romantic invitation? Certainly not another oystercatcher. Oystercatchers are striking shorebirds known for their long, bright orange bills, as you can see., They use their bills to pry open shellfish such as oysters and mussels. These birds are commonly found along coastal habitats, And besides their striking looks, their loud, distinctive calls and make them stand out. And then there is the beach itself.

How would you describe a beach to someone who has never seen the sea or a lake?

What Is A Beach

Perhaps that a beach is part of the land next to a large body of water. The beach is made up of lose particles from grains of sand to large pebbles. And if the beach is by the sea then there may well be seashells and small creatures on the beach. I guess we can say that over time, all pebble beaches will become sand beaches by the action of water and temperature.

Water rubs one piece of material against another. Hot weather followed by cold weather cracks open rocks over time. And beaches have time, many hundreds of thousands of years.

Beyond this basic description of a beach are the divisions. The foreshore is what we call the strip between the low and high water marks. Then there can be berms and dunes, and perhaps tidal flats.

Humans have their part to play in all this. Beaches are for recreation, for playing on, for running over on our way to swim in the sea. They are places to find those small sea creatues that live in the pools and tidal flats.
