The Calla lily is also known as the Arum lily and it symbolises beauty. It is a relative of an English wild flower known as the Arum or Cuckoo pint or any of half a dozen other names.
If you have ever walked in an English wood you may well have seen the wild flower. It likes damp shade. And in the late summer its pale green spathe that encircles the spadix folds back. When it does so, it reveals the cluster of berries that turn bright red.
This lily, on the other hand, never folds back. Rather, it keeps its spathe wrapped around the spadix throughout its whole lifecycle. One has to look down and into the flower where one is rewarded with the sight of the beautiful yellow spadix. That is to say, it looks like it is wrapped in a delicate blanket of a single white petal.

We saw calla lilies in South Africa on the Cape. In the damp forest areas around the fynbos we saw them in little clumps her and there tucked in the base of trees. And we also saw many people selling long-stemmed calla lilies by the roadside. It is illegal to harvest them in the wild, but people do what they must when poverty is so rife.
