Flock
A flock of sheep Leaving Card featuring a flock of sheep with a speech bubble and one of them saying ‘All the best from the flock – we’ll miss you.’
The flock is that thing that in human beings brings out the most complex of human reactions – some love groups and some cannot stand them.
As well as using it to describe a flock of sheep, we also use the partitive noun ‘flock’ for goats. And of course we also use it for birds generally, as well as for geese and chickens. On the other hand, what we don’t use it for is any kind of inanimate object or thing.
The clue to the use of the partitive may be in the origin of the word. Recorded as early as the mid thirteenth century, the word meant a tuft of wool. So that’s an obvious connection with sheep or goats. And going back to Latin there is floccus, meaning a tuft of wool or a lock of hair.
