Florets
A Mother’s Day Card with Pink Chrysanthemum florets and text ‘Happy Mother’s Day’. We named this card ‘Florets’ because it show the florets of a flower As you can perhaps see, it is a photo of the florets that collectively make up the composite head of a chrysanthemum.
Run that past me again. What exactly are florets?
Florets are the small individual flowers that are part of a larger inflorescence. An inflorescence is a fancy word for the complete flower head of a plant. That includes stems, stalks, bracts, and flowers.
OK, so what are bracts?
Bracts are modified leaves. They are connected to or close to the petals of a flower. Their function is to protect the delicate petals. Accordingly they are usually smaller than the petals. After all they don’t want to divert a pollinator’s attention away from the main course. That said, sometimes they are actually bigger than the petals. And with a few species of flower, the bracts are bigger and more colourful that the petals of the flower.
To get back to florets, which is where we started, they are common on grasses and cereals, and on plants like daisies and sunflowers. The total structure of all the florets is the inflorescence. Now it is easy picture when we think of sunflowers or daisies.
