Picture the scarlet ibis poking around in the mud flats, estuaries, shorelines, and shallow bays of its native South America, from Argentina to Venezuela and into the islands of the Caribbean. See it gobble up crustaceans, mollusks, small fish, even insects, frogs, and small snakes, poking with its long, thin, downward bill. How safe from predators it must be to have such vivid colouring. That may be down to its size, a heft 75 cm (30 in.) tall with a wingspan of 30 cm (12 in.). In fact the colouring comes from carotene found in the crustaceans they eat. That effect is the same as for flamingoes and their diet. And people if they eat enough carrots.
