Irises

An Anniversary card featuring irises and text in a banner that reads, ‘Happy Anniversary, Darling’. Everyone loves irises. And it’s easy to understand why. They have such beautiful colours. The dark blue-purple of the ones here is just one of the colours. The paler blue is more traditional, but you’ll find over 300 species if you search around.

Irises Anniversary card

Whichever kind of iris you see, they are identified by the petals that curve over like delicate paper-thin material shifting with the breeze. We think we captured this richness and the way the petals fall in this Irises Anniversary card.

The dark colour of the irises in this card is so rich. And it is all the more splendid against the deep yellow of the centre of the flower heads. That’s not to ignore the Yellow Flag that grows wild in shallow water or near water is just one of the colours that is ‘not blue’, but there are plenty of others. There are blue, purple, yellow, white, pink, orange, brown, red, and even black irises.

One reason irises are successful is that they grow from rhizomes that spread along the ground and from which now plants shoot. In dry climates, irises grow from bulbs, and that way they don’t need to grow near water.

Irises are named after the Greek goddess Iris, who was the messenger of the gods. Iris was also the paradigm of the rainbow. Putting two and two together we can say that the many colours of irises date at least from antiquity.

Let’s round this off with a list of just a few of the outrageously lovely names that breeders have dreamed up. What about these dreamy names then?
