Let It Snow
A greeting card for every day featuring snow-laden trees and a little bird singing ‘Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.’
Ah the pleasure of being somewhere warm and cosy and looking through the window to a snowy scene. Or in the case of this little bird, being out in the snow and enjoying every minute of it.
These words were also in the lyrics to a song written in the 1940s by Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne. Sammy Cahn wrote lyrics for dozens of songs that Frank Sinatra performed. So these little word have an illustrious connection. Of course for as long as there has been snow there have been people (and birds) telling the snow it can just go on snowing.
I went to sleep listening to rain on the roof.
Now the steam from my coffee fogs the window, and as I wipe the glass clear I’m treated to a new world made of snow just beyond the windowpane.
I’ve intentionally left the interior lights off while I stand hugging my mug and watch the little snowflakes drift down from the sky.
I am spellbound by nature’s performance and I’m convinced this has been choreographed especially for me.
Snow is a great equalizer, it’s magical and creates fairytale images from whatever it touches. The old tree in the garden is a perfect example. It’s always been there; a fine, strong tree that’s weathered storms, drought and squirrels, but somehow it seemed to sag under the weight of summer’s heat.
Now, its limbs are doused in snow, and the old tree sparkles as if painted with thousands of diamonds.
The coffee has grown cold, momentarily forgotten at the edge of the sink as I rummage for mittens and boots – I feel a sense of urgency. The day is waning, and there are snow angels waiting to be created.
