We cannot let the opportunity pass by to repeat the well-known verse or limerick that goes something along these lines:
A wonderful bird is the pelican
Its beak can hold more than its belly can
It can hold in its beak
Enough food for a week

We had the opportunity recently to interact closely with pelicans. So close, in fact that we were able to put our hands inside the beak of one of them.
The pelican held on very gently and although at one point it tried to swallow an arm whole, it was a pleasant experience to interact so closely.
The upper beak feels like a thin piece of lightweight wood and the edge of the beak feels slightly rasp like. And because the lower beak is translucent, light illuminates the threat and you can see all the way down.
Quite amazing.
