Peony greeting card

A Peony greeting card for every day featuring a pink and white peony with yellow stamens set against dark green leaves.

The peony gets its name from Paean, who was a student of Aesculapius, the Greek god of medicine and healing.

Sad to relate, Aesculapius became jealous of his pupil and the only way that Zeus could save the poor student was to turn him into a flower. It is a lovely flower and perhaps Paean was reconciled to being a peony. Alternatively Paean could have been turned into a Peony greeting card, in which case he would be seen on mantelpieces and kitchen tables all over the place.

Today we know Aesculapius from the staff and the entwined serpent that is the symbol for doctors and medicine.
