Description
Three women Mother’s Day card. The women are walking out together. They are from about the fin de siecle of the 1890s, walking line abreast. They are not young and look of an age to be mothers to at least teenage children. All three wear extravagant hats and fashionable clothing. One wears a brocade shawl. They are obviously well to do. The image is topped off above with an advertisement for D Barnasconi of Amsterdam which is a manufacturer of clothing:. From the clothing we can assume that the women are walking about in cold weather, probably iin winter.
The Mother’s Day card has text above the artwork that reads ‘Happy Mother’s Day’. The artwork is from a print by Johann Georg van Caspel. He was Dutch, born in 1870. He studied in the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam and then went on to work in the studio of another painter, Maurits van Der Falk. This painting and others he did have a graphic quality, and his style suited the mass market appeal of advertising posters of the day.
