Description

Two women on the beach, one wringing out her hair after she has been in the sea, with a dog startled by the dripping water falling to the sand, and another woman cloaked in a changing robe and wearing a cap for her hair.

The artwork is by Winslow Homer.

Winslow Homer was born before the start of the American Civil War. It doesn’t seem to be broadly known that he painted scenes from the war. For example he painted a sharpshooter in a tree taking aim. He died in 1910 and so he was witness to the raw years of the end of slavery and emancipation. And that was his gift. His paintings gave humanity to everyone, whatever the colour, whatever the position in the social order. And then in his later years he left people and turned to the raw elements of the sea and some of his most dramatic paintings. He was a giant – for his draughtsmanship and for his ability to read inside people and what binds us all.
