Eyelashes

A greeting card for every day – a haunting face from just eyelashes, red lips, and the suggestion of nostrils.

How little one needs to create the impression of a person.

And what is true for people is true for birds.

In the 1930s David Lack, a schoolteacher from Devon, was researching the life of the British robin. He wrote ‘The Life of the Robin’, which was published in 1943 and the book became one of the iconic books on bird observation.

David Lack wanted to know what happened when a robin encroaches on the territory of other robins.

He saw that both male and female robins are so territorial that they attack intruders without mercy until either the intruder or the attacker flies off. The fights were ugly and sometimes the defeated birds were left battered.

Lack experimented with stuffed robins and he noticed that a robin continued to attack one of his dummy robins even after the dummy’s head had been knocked off.

That made him wonder exactly how little there had to be that was identifiably ‘robin-like’ for it to trigger a fight for territory.

He found was that his dummies didn’t need a head, tail, wings – just a bundle of red wool was enough to suggest ‘robin’.
